Belarus calls for genuine security community in OSCE region

MINSK, 20 June (BelTA) – Belarus speaks for the need to build up a genuine security community in the OSCE region. The Belarusian delegation highlighted the issue at the OSCE Annual Security Review Conference which started in Vienna on 19 June, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus.

The Belarusian delegation comprises head of the department for international security and arms control at the Foreign Ministry Vladimir Gerasimovich and Permanent Representative of Belarus to the OSCE Valery Voronetsky.

The agenda of the conference includes the issues related to cooperation in the formation of the security community in the process of Helsinki+40 program, counteraction to transnational threats and challenges, conflict prevention and crisis regulation. The participants of the forum also consider the issues regarding cooperation in the renewal and modernization of agreements in conventional arms control and confidence and security building measures. The participants of the event talk over security challenges coming from Afghanistan, a strategy to provide assistance to the country and its region.

Belarus stressed the need for building up a genuine security community in the OSCE region and spoke for strengthening cooperation in the priority areas of activity. Belarus focused attention on the OSCE potential in counteracting new challenges and threats to collective security – terrorism, illegal migration and human trafficking. Besides, Belarus’ delegation called for the continuation and intensification of efforts of the participating states in resuming the dialogue on the arms control in Europe as well as improvement of confidence and security building measures.

The Annual Security Review Conference is one of the main and regular events held by the OSCE. The conference assesses the situation and possible areas of cooperation in security in the Organization’s region. Partaking in the event are high-level representatives from the ministries of foreign affairs, defense, other structures of the OSCE member states responsible for the OSCE activity in security.
