CIS main economic forum kicks off in St Petersburg

MOSCOW, 20 June (BelTA) – St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), the main economic forum of the Commonwealth of Independent States, kicks off in the Northern Russian capital on 20 June. The three-day forum will gather over 5,000 representatives of the political and business circles, leading scientists, including 66 foreign delegations, BelTA learnt from the press center of the forum.

The forum will be held under the motto “Prospects of Global Economy: Time for Decisive Actions”. The forum will highlight several themes including the Global Agenda of Sustainable Economic Growth. The participants of the meetings will discuss the main factors defining the development of the global economy and measures for economic reorganization and promotion of sustainable growth.

The forum will highlight the potential of using advanced technologies and innovative approaches in addressing the issues of the economy and society.

The forum will also discuss the G20 issues as the St Petersburg International Economic Forum 2013 is held in the year of Russia’s G20 presidency. Thus, the program will include the debates on the issues which will top the agenda of the forthcoming G20 summit: promotion of investments for economic growth, national debt management, the reform of the international financial system, sustainable development of energy markets and strengthening of the global trade. The forum will host the following events: Youth 20, Business 20, and a business forum Russia-ASEAN.

The forum is a platform for the discussion of important economic issues, investment presentations and also the conclusion of important agreements and documents. The participants of the forum are expected to sign an agreement on the creation of a unified transport and logistics company by the national railway operators of Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The document also envisages joint events in the development of the transport infrastructure of the three countries.

St Petersburg International Economic Forum was first held in 1997. In 2001 it received an official status of the CIS main economic forum. SPIEF is an annual event held under the auspices and with the participation of the President of Russia.
