Belarus approves Antarctica cooperation agreement with Russia

MINSK, 18 June (BelTA) – The Council of Ministers has approved the agreement between the governments of Belarus and Russia on cooperation in Antarctica. The move was authorized by Council of Ministers’ Resolution No. 484 of 14 June 2013, BelTA has learnt.

The document on cooperation in Antarctica was inked between the governments of the two countries in Saint Petersburg on 15 March 2013. The document envisages joint research and programs, development of a system of measures to protect environment of Antarctica, exchange of specialists.

The Foreign Ministry of Belarus has been authorized to notify the Russian side on Belarus’ fulfillment of all interstate procedures necessary for the agreement to take effect.

A reminder, Belarus plans to build its polar station in Antarctica. The first construction unit is due to arrive in Antarctica in November-December 2014. Russian specialists will assist Belarus in the project.
