Lukashenko: Singapore is ideal platform for promoting Belarusian goods in the region

SINGAPORE, 21 March (BelTA) - Singapore is the ideal platform for the promotion of Belarusian goods in the region, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said during the talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, BelTA learnt.

Alexander Lukashenko drew attention to the fact that so far the trade between Belarus and Singapore has been low, amounting to as little as $26.5 million in 2012. “This is totally not enough considering that there are many areas of cooperation. We can and must increase the volume of our trade. This is the goal we must set for ourselves,” the Belarusian head of state said.

"We are sure that Singapore is then ideal platform for the promotion of Belarusian products in this promising region," stressed the President.

The Belarusian leader believes the two sides can unite their efforts here. Belarusian Potash Company has opened its office in Singapore to secure uninterrupted annual MOP supplies from Belarus to Southeast Asia (worth hundreds millions of U.S. dollars). The countries have similar prospects regarding supplies of high- tech mechanical engineering products.

Alexander Lukashenko spoke of his meeting with President of Singapore Tony Tam Keng Yam. According to the Belarusian leader, the sides confirmed mutual interest in building up all-round relations between the two countries. The sides believe it is necessary to lay a solid foundation for future cooperation during this highest-level visit, which is the first one in the history of bilateral relations.
