Belarus suspends poultry imports from Germany over bird flu

MINSK, 28 May (BelTA) - Belarus has suspended the import of poultry products, including eggs and frozen meat, from Germany, BelTA learnt from the veterinary and food supervision department of the Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus.

According to Rosselkhoznadzor (the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance), a case of low pathogenic bird flu (H7N7) was registered in the districts Osnabruck and Vechta of Germany.

Bird flu (highly pathogenic bird flu, plague) is a contagious disease characterized by swelling, lesions of the respiratory and digestive systems, depressions, with varying degrees of severity (from asymptomatic infection to severe forms of generalized septicemia). The economic damage from the disease is great due to the mass deaths of birds, the need for strict quarantine and veterinary and sanitary measures, including the destruction of diseased birds.
