Lukashenko against erecting monuments, including to himself

MINSK, 7 May (BelTA) – President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is not in favor of erecting monuments, including to himself. Alexander Lukashenko made this statement as he talked to young people at a ceremony to launch the construction of the Magistr residential compound for literary and scholarly people in Minsk on 7 May, BelTA has learnt.

According to the President, monuments should be of a different kind, they should be useful to people, like the Museum of the Great Patriotic War that is under construction now or the Victory Park in Minsk. “I totally oppose building monuments to specific people. I am against a monument to the first President of the country. There were so many suggestions… I said, “you can do it only after I die if you have nothing else to do”. I strongly oppose erecting such monuments,” the head of state emphasized.

Alexander Lukashenko is convinced that people should be remembered by the things they do, not by monuments.
