Belarus, CE sign agreement on privileges and immunities of experts on action against trafficking

MINSK, (BelTA) - Belarus and the Council of Europe signed the agreement on privileges and immunities of the members of the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) and other members of the delegation that visit to countries in Strasbourg on 26 November, BelTA learnt from the Belarusian Embassy in France.

The document was signed by Belarus’ Interior Minister Igor Shunevich and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland. The signing ceremony was attended by Belarusian Ambassador to France Pavel Latushko.

The agreement on the privileges and immunities completes the procedure of entry into force of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings for Belarus, which the country was invited to join by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2012.

On 1 March 2014 Belarus will become a full party to the Convention. This will enhance cooperation with other countries of Europe and help prevent trafficking, protect victims and prosecute offenders.

Igor Shunevich and Thorbjorn Jagland exchanged views about the current interaction of Belarus and the Council of Europe, the prospects for meaningful involvement of the Republic of Belarus in the mechanisms of the Convention, the accession of Belarus to other mechanisms of cooperation of the Council of Europe.
