Presidential campaign to begin in Belarus in August 2015

MINSK, 13 November (BelTA) – The presidential campaign will start in Belarus in August 2015, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina told reporters on 13 November, BelTA has learnt.

“August 2015 will mark the start of the election campaign. The presidential election is to be held by 20 November 2015,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

In line with the electoral legislation, the presidential campaign should start not later than five months and the presidential election should occur not later than two months before the expiry of the term of office of the incumbent President. Lidia Yermoshina reminded reporters that the inauguration of Alexander Lukashenko took place on 20 January 2011. “Therefore, the term of office of the President expires on 20 January 2016,” the head of the CEC said.

As was reported earlier, a bill to amend some laws related to elections and referendums passed the second reading in the House of Representatives on 13 November. The limit on campaign funds of presidential candidates will be increased from 3,000 to 9,000 base amounts (now one base amount equals Br130,000). However, campaign funds of candidates running for a seat in the House of Representatives will remain the same – 1,000 base amounts.
