Belarus, UN to bolster cooperation in legal matters

MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) - Belarus and the UN will bolster cooperation in legal matters. This issue was discussed during a meeting of the Sixth Committee (Legal) of the UN General Assembly, which was attended by the delegation of Belarus, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Foreign Ministry.


The head of the Legal Department of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus Andrei Popkov participated in the annual meeting of leaders of the legal services of the foreign ministries of the countries- friends of the United Nations. The meeting participants discussed the current issues of international law, including the UN Court's interaction with other United Nations agencies and states, the application of international law by national courts.

Andrei Popkov held the consultations with representatives of a number of countries to discuss the development of the legal framework of bilateral cooperation and contacts at the regional and global levels, taking into account the participation of Belarus in the work of the committee of legal advisers on public international law of the Council of Europe and in the legal working group of the Non-Aligned Movement.

During the discussion of the report of the International Law Commission the Belarusian diplomat held meetings with special rapporteurs on further development of the law of treaties and the interaction of Belarus with the Commission. Andrei Popkov articulated the position of Belarus on the topics that are fall within the purview of the commission, in particular, the complex issues of the law of treaties, international investment law, governmental immunity, international cooperation in the fight against crime.

In addition, Andrei Popkov met with UN Under-Secretary General for Legal Affairs Miguel de Serpa Soares to discuss the prospects of further cooperation of Belarus with the UN in the legal field, approaches to current trends in the development of international law. Belarus’ representative also met with the leadership of the Sixth Committee.
