Belarus’ achievements in promoting children's rights praised by UNICEF

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – Belarus’ Deputy Foreign Minister Valentin Rybakov met with Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Anthony Lake and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Kate Gilmore in New York.

The status of implementation of the UNICEF projects in Belarus and the country's cooperation with UNICEF were discussed during the meeting with the UNICEF Executive Director. Valentin Rybakov invited UNICEF to interact more with Belarus in assisting disabled children, women and children affected by the Chernobyl disaster, in prevention of HIV/AIDS, combating trafficking in human beings. Anthony Lake praised the achievements of Belarus in promoting the rights of children, and in reducing the maternal and child mortality. Anthony Lake assured the Belarusian side that UNICEF will continue to support the national priorities of the country.

The issues of Belarus’ cooperation with UNFPA were high on the agenda of a meeting with Ms Kate Gilmore. Priorities for cooperation include demographic security, combating bad habits of young people, HIV/AIDS prevention, combating domestic violence and human trafficking. Kate Gilmore praised the cooperation between UNFPA and Belarus and expressed her willingness to continue to assist the country in addressing its priority issues within the framework of the UNFPA country program for Belarus for 2011-2015 and in the future.
