Alexei Begun: CIS needs common procedure for processing refugee status requests
MINSK (BelTA) The CIS countries need to consolidate their efforts in introducing a common procedure for processing refugee status requests, head of the Department of Citizenship and Migration at the Interior Ministry of Belarus Alexei Begun told media during the regional seminar on 3 December, BelTA informs.
“The member states should consolidate their efforts in order to introduce a common procedure for processing the documents on granting the refugee status. This unified procedure is needed for a person who comes, for instance, to Russia and applies for the refugee status there, to wait for it in the country and do not travel around the neighboring countries in the search for better living conditions,” said Alexei Begun.
In his words, the traditional refugee-generating countries such as the states of the African continent were joined by the regions with the ongoing armed hostilities, Syria for instance. “I can say there no forecasts on massive inflow of refugees in the near future,” the head of the department added.
The regional forum on asylum policy has gathered experts from Belgium, Germany, Latvia, Poland and Romania as well as representatives of the EU, the United Nations Office of the Higher Commissioner for Refugees and the competent bodies of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The forum has been organized to study the best international practices in forced migration, enhance the quality of training and taking decisions on granting the refugee status, and improve the professional level of the personnel of the interior bodies in the issues of the relevant national and international legislation.
