Lukashenko: Over the past 25 years the CIS has grown into a modern regional community

MINSK (BelTA) - Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has sent greetings to the leaders of the CIS member states on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.

The head of state noted that the CIS Treaty which was signed on 8 December 1991 marked the start of integration in the post-Soviet space.

“Over the past 25 years, relying on the principles of respect for national priorities and freedom of expression of its member states, the Commonwealth of Independent States has grown into a modern regional community that takes into account the interests of all the parties,” Alexander Lukashenko stressed.

The President stressed that a decision was taken on 16 September 2016 to adapt the CIS to the present-day challenges. The decision determined the direction for its further development. The head of state is confident that this landmark event will strengthen the image of the CIS, making it an even more relevant organization.
