Belarus initiating UN resolution on role of family, school, society in preventing drugs use

MINSK (BelTA) – Within the framework of the United Nations Organization Belarus is initiating a resolution on reinforcing the role of the family, the school, and the society in preventing the use of narcotic drugs in children and teenagers, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

A Belarusian delegation led by Head of the Global Policy and Humanitarian Cooperation Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vadim Pisarevich was in Vienna on 30 November. The delegation took part in a special session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs. During the session Belarus mentioned plans to initiate the development of a draft resolution within the framework of the 60th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in order to bolster the role of the family, the school, and the society in preventing the use of drugs in children and teenagers.

Participants of the session discussed the operation of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs after the special session of the UN General Assembly on the world drug problem.

The head of the Belarusian delegation made a speech to explain how Belarus expects the implementation of the resulting document of the special session to proceed. The central role of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in working out international approaches to resolving the narcotic problem in a balanced and comprehensive manner was noted. Vadim Pisarevich underlined it is necessary to also get other international organizations involved in this work such as the World Health Organization, the UN Human Rights Council, and UN Women. The organizations could make a certain contribution to the effort.

The special session of the UN General Assembly on the world drug problem took place in New York, USA in April 2016. The Belarusian delegation was led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei. The resulting document of the session includes virtually all the practice-oriented recommendations on fighting the world drug problem.
