Belarus' approach to reforming UN operational activities receives support

MINSK (BelTA) - United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Mr Wu Hongbo supported the approach towards reforming the Organization's operational activities suggested by Belarus as he met with Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov in New York, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Mr Wu Hongbo supported the approach suggested by Belarus who believes that when reforming the operational activities of the United Nations, focus should be made not on the restructuring of the entire system but on improving the existing mechanisms while maintaining a non-political nature of the reformed system and freedom of states in choosing the methods and actions to achieve the sustainable development goals,” the press service said.

The parties also discussed the promotion of the Belarusian initiative on family in the UN and the preparation of the Conference of the UN Economic Commission for Europe “Creating a framework for integration and sustainable development in the UNECE region” which will be held in Minsk in October. “The parties agreed to maintain contacts to promote Belarusian initiatives in the context of the new development agenda,” the press service informed.

During the visit to New York, Valentin Rybakov also met with UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova to discuss the UN Secretary General selection campaign. The diplomat also took part in a public debate with the candidates to the post of the head of the United Nations.
