Lukashenko, Poroshenko honor memory of Chernobyl clean-up workers

CHERNOBYL (BelTA) - Presidents of Belarus and Ukraine Alexander Lukashenko and Petro Poroshenko paid tribute to the memory of the Chernobyl clean-up workers in the day of another anniversary of the nuclear disaster, BelTA has learned.

The heads of state laid flowers to The Wall of Memory in the Memorial to the Heroes of Chernobyl.

The Wall of Memory has been installed near the administration building of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The memorial is made of red and white stone, topped by a massive arch with the bell and the cross.

Around the perimeter there are granite plaques with the names of the employees of the plant who died cleaning up the contamination in the wake of the accident at the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The 200-year-old bell on top of the three-meter arch has been donated by the head of St. Elias Church of Chernobyl to the nuclear power plant. Every year, on 26 April, the bell chimes in memory of the Chernobyl victims.
