Lukashenko: Business promotion decisions should meet Belarus' interests

MINSK (BelTA) – A final decision on the package of documents aimed at stimulating business activity in Belarus should be balanced and should meet the interests of the country, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he heard out a report on the fulfillment of instructions to stimulate business activity on 8 August, BelTA has learned.

“A final decision on these documents should be balanced and should meet the interests of our country. We should be absolutely sure that the chosen vector of legal regulation in business is right,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

The president emphasized that the state should not and will not lose control in the economy. “People will not forgive us then. If something happens, the government will be accountable for it, and business will be less accountable,” the Belarusian leader said.

In January 2017, the head of state set up a working group to improve audit activities and eliminate excessive regulations in economic operations. He hosted a session to determine the main objectives of work for this group in February. A package of documents to encourage business in Belarus has been prepared as a result.

“Legal acts under consideration contain a number of serious innovations for the economic sector ranging from the notifying principle of the beginning of certain business activities to the system of random checks. Of course, this is a serious step towards building up trust in the business community,” Alexander Lukashenko underlined.

According to the president, the government is expected to make decisions that will help all people start a business and work with a minimal set of regulations. “All unnecessary barriers should be eliminated. Unfortunately, there is a number of such barriers today,” the head of state remarked.

In particular, Alexander Lukashenko spoke about barriers in the construction industry. “We abolished licensing some time ago. However, new requirements emerged, namely the assessment of enterprises, certification of construction works, technical competence certificates. As a result, representatives of the business community believe that there remains too many regulations in this sector.” Besides, according to the president, it is needed to pay more attention to designer and customer supervision.
