Housing construction plans to be revised with focus on rented homes in Belarus

MINSK (BelTA) - The government, oblast executive committees, and the Minsk City Hall have were instructed to revise housing construction programs and focus more on the construction of rented housing using the funds of enterprises and organizations. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko gave a corresponding instruction at the republican conference on measures to raise the efficiency of the Belarusian construction industry on 23 November, BelTA informs.

The head of state remarked that the market of rented housing is developing rather slowly in Belarus. Only 745,000 square meters, or 2% of the total volume of new housing, were built within six years. For example, the share of rented housing is 58% in Germany and 71% in Switzerland.

“As practice shows, this housing is in high demand in Belarus. There are at least 150 people per one rented apartment on waiting lists. It is also important to develop the market of rented housing to deal with labor migration,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

In his words, the construction of such housing will help raise the inflow of young specialists to small and medium-sized towns. “It is essential to build more housing in towns with good prospects for industrial development. For example, it is done in Ostrovets,” the Belarusian leader added.
