Golovchenko: Belarus’ banks focus on developing their own AI models

MINSK ( BelTA) – Belarusian banks are focused not on external off-the-shelf solutions but on developing their own robust AI models, Chairman of the Board of the National Bank Roman Golovchenko said at an off-site meeting to discuss AI in banking activities, BelTA learned from the Information and Public Relations Department of the National Bank.

“A number of our banks are placing this issue at the center of their attention, directing significant financial and human resources toward digital transformation in general and the introduction of artificial intelligence into their operations. This is not an artificial process, not an isolated IT project: it is an initiative that directly affects operational efficiency,” Roman Golovchenko noted.

According to him, results are never instantaneous because the processes involved are very complex. “It is encouraging that most of our banks are following their own path, investing in development and building their own teams of engineers. In other words, we are focused not on external boxed solutions but on creating our own sustainable AI models: implementing them, training them, and developing them. We prioritize practical impact and its evaluation in the context of the quality of banking services,” the chairman of the National Bank added.

For banks, on the one hand, implementing AI is an opportunity to reduce operating costs, customize products for specific clients, and improve economic performance. On the other hand, it saves human resources.

“Given that our country is quite compact, I believe that the best solutions developed by banks in their respective areas will naturally flow within our banking community from one organization to another,” Roman Golovchenko emphasized.

The off-site meeting was held at the central office of Sber Bank. Previously, this topic, highly relevant for the banking sector, was discussed at Alfa Bank and Belarusbank. The task of implementing AI in the banking sphere is reflected in the National Bank’s and financial sector’s medium-term program for 2026–2030. Its implementation will enhance the efficiency, quality, and security of banking services and give an additional boost to the competitiveness of the banking sector.
