Senators approve bill on amendments to Belarus' Electoral Code

MINSK ( BelTA) – Senators approved the bill “On amendments to the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus” at the meeting of the tenth session of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation on 30 January, BelTA has learned.

The bill seeks to amend the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus in order to calibrate it with reality and bring it into line with legislative acts, including the updated Constitution.

The new provisions of the bill allow more people to take part in the voting process. They also regulate the procedures for electing delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress, for setting up the Central Election Commission and for holding elections to the Council of the Republic and setting up polling stations abroad. They remove the turnout threshold requirement for recognizing elections to the House of Representatives valid. Additional requirements are introduced for candidates running for a seat in the parliament, in local Councils of Deputies, in the Council of the Republic and the National People's Congress, for persons nominated to election commissions, referendum commissions, etc.
