Lukashenko backs single currency in Eurasian Union

MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – In the interview to the Saturday News program with Sergei Brilev of the Russia TV Channel, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko stated he sees single currency as a possible option in the Eurasian Union.

The Belarusian leader did not rule out a possibility of introducing single currency similar to the European Currency Unit (ECU) used in noncash settlements.

The President emphasized that slapdash actions might lead to the current situation in the European zone.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that he started talking about using national currency in mutual payments long time ago. “Let us use the Russian ruble in paying Russia for energy and raw material. Let us start using the Russian currency more. Your President has supported the idea. In that way we will reduce the use of US dollars in our payments,” the Belarusian head of state said.
