EBRD reveals higher democracy support in CIS including Belarus

LONDON, 15 November (BelTA-ITAR-TASS) – The current global economic meltdown has had its negative impact on the support for democracy and market economy in Central and Eastern Europe but has strengthened this support in some CIS countries and South Europe, says the EBRD report, Crisis and Transition: The People’s Perspective.

The bank’s annual survey analyses economic and social reforms in 29 countries. This year’s report focuses on the crisis impact on the public opinion and attitude of voters.

According to the report, the support for democracy and markets has declined in many of the more advanced transition countries, including new EU members. On the other hand, it has increased in quite a few of the countries of the Commonwealth of
Independent States (CIS), which are not as far along the path of transition.

According to the data of the latest survey, the countries with the highest levels of support for democracy are Turkey, Montenegro, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Albania, Tajikistan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia.

Conversely, Hungary, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia, which had previously been among the top 10 supporters of democracy, all recorded significant falls – and by over 20 percentage points in the case of the Slovak Republic, says the EBRD report.
