Belarus staunch advocate of integration in CIS

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – Belarus has been and will remain an active supporter of integration within the CIS, Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said at a conference 20 Years of the CIS on 28 September, BelTA has learnt.

The head of government emphasized that Belarus is optimistic about the future of the Commonwealth of Independent States. “Amid global challenges and uncertainty around the world, the CIS is a factor of stability,” the Prime Minister is convinced. In his words, the expectation of the second wave of the global financial and economic crisis lingering in the air keeps affecting the global economy, including the export-oriented CIS Participating states. “We need to turn the CIS into an economic stability zone. It is quite realistic,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

He believes that the CIS is able to prevent and minimize the negative consequences of global market fluctuations.

An agreement on free trade zone will be highly instrumental in achieving this goal. The draft agreement is almost completed. It will give an additional impetus to the development of trade within the CIS, encourage competition and boost national economies and the CIS potential as a whole. “Belarus has always been and will be an active advocate of the integration within the CIS,” Mikhail Myasnikovich underlined. In his view, the CIS member states underuse the cooperation potential of the organization. “The cooperation potential in trade and investment should be exploited further,” the head of government said. He reminded that the topical issues of the CIS development will be discussed at an informal summit of the CIS heads of state in Moscow in December.
