Belarus-Kazakhstan trade almost $1bn in 2011

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) - In 2011 Belarus-Kazakhstan trade, according to preliminary data, reached almost $1 billion, with Belarus having a surplus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to Belarus Anatoly Smirnov told reporters.

The Ambassador stressed that currently the talks is underway to involve Belarus in more than 30 major projects in Kazakhstan. So far the trade between the two countries has been modest. Once the Single Economic Space operates at full capacity, the mutual trade will increase two to three times, Anatoly Smirnov believes.

The Ambassador stressed that Kazakhstan’s presence in Belarus is still small. At the same time Kazakhstan’s BTA Bank invests in joint projects including the construction of a five-star hotel in Minsk.

The diplomat noted that Kazakhstani businessmen are interested in infrastructure development in Belarus, especially ahead of the 2014 IIHF World Championship.
