About 70,000 people take to streets in Minsk to welcome in New Year

MINSK, 2 January (BelTA) - About 70,000 Minskers took to streets to welcome in the New Year, BelTA learnt from the press service of the interior department of the Minsk City Hall.

The New Year entertainment show on the square near the Palace of Republic brought together about 3,000 people. About 10,000 gathered for a show near the National Library, and around 3,000 near the Palace of Sports. Over 33,000 people turned out near the stele “Minsk-Hero-City” to watch the festive New Year's fireworks.

In addition, about 8,000 Minskers attended the celebrations which took place at 30 venues throughout the city.

Security in Minsk was tightened on the New Year's night. “The task of ensuring public order was implemented. No emergencies or crimes were reported,” informed the Minsk interior department. Security measures will remain tightened until 3 January.
