Medvedev calls Belarus-Russia relations sincere, meaningful, and efficient

MINSK, 19 July (BelTA) – The relations between Belarus and Russia are sincere, meaningful and efficient, Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev told reporters in Minsk on 18 July, BelTA has learnt.

In his words, in recent years the bilateral relations have seen their ups and downs, there have been some issues and tensions. However, thanks to concerted effort the atmosphere has recently changed and Belarus-Russia cooperation can be called sincere, meaningful and efficient. This pertains to politics, economy and cooperation in the humanitarian and other fields.

Dmitry Medvedev pointed to the unprecedented growth in the bilateral trade that hit a record high of $38 billion. This is attributed not only to active cooperation in general, but also integration within the framework of the Customs Union. “The Customs Union, no matter what they write about it, generates appreciable dividends for the parties. This is the best proof that economies are more successful if they integrate,” Dmitry Medvedev said.

Belarus and Russia have outlined a number of joint projects. The biggest one is the construction of the nuclear power plant. The total investments into the project are estimated at $10 billion. Dmitry Medvedev expressed confidence that more projects will follow that will be as big and meaningful as that one.

The session of the Union State Council of Ministers discussed 23 topics on 18 July. The discussion did not take much time, Dmitry Medvedev said. This means that all the topics had been thoroughly prepared, therefore, they did not require many hours of discussion.

The participants of the session signed 12 resolutions of the Union State Council of Ministers, including a concept of the Union State space program Monitoring-SG, the 2012 action plan to implement the 2011-2015 social development concept of the Union State, the Union State concept “Innovative development of potato and artichoke production for the period until 2015” and the concept of the program “Reinforcing border security of the Union State for 2012-2016”. The parties also discussed balances of fuel and energy sources and balances of demand and supply of the major commodities of the Union State for 2012.
