Skolkovo research advisory board to meet in Minsk in September

MINSK, 8 June (BelTA) – Belarus is interested in hosting a subsidiary or an office of the Russian fund Skolkovo, Belarus Premier Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with Noble Prize holder Zhores Alferov on 8 June.

Mikhail Myasnikovich and Zhores Alferov discussed the initiatives to expand sci-tech cooperation, including with the participation of the Russian Skolkovo. The Belarusian PM noted that he would like to hear the opinion of the prominent scientist on the current cooperation development. Mikhail Myasnikovich expressed his concerns regarding the possibility of Belarus’ intellectual potential draining to other countries. “We should think of opening the Skolkovo subsidiary here, in Belarus,” he said. The move will boost partnership between scientific centers in Russia and Belarus, the Belarusian head of government said.

Zhores Alferov suggested holding a meeting of the Skolkovo research advisory board in Minsk in September. The scientist is a co-chair of the board. This year the board sat in Berlin in March and in Novosibirsk in May. “My proposal is to hold the next meeting in Minsk in September,” Zhores Alferov said. In his words, the event is important for Belarus. “Unlike the majority of the former Soviet countries, Belarus has preserved high-technology industries. Skolkovo’s main objective is the revival of high-technology industries in Russia. I believe here our joint work with Belarusians will bring very good results,” he stressed.

The board comprises many outstanding scientists from the US, Germany, and France. It is important that they see how the Belarusian science and technologies develop. The National Academy of Sciences is highly qualified scientists, good institutes, Zhores Alferov said. Science should be commoditized. It should promote sci-tech achievements into start-up companies, he added.

Zhores Alferov praised a high level of IT technologies that Belarusian companies display at international forums in other countries.

In his words, Skolkovo is not just a territory of 300 hectares near Moscow, it is an ideology. “It should be developed across Russia and the Union State,” he said.
