CSTO getting ready to establish cooperation with NATO
MOSCOW, 28 March (BelTA) – The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is preparing a statement on establishing cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The draft statement was considered by the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers on 27 March, BelTA learnt from CSTO spokesman Vladimir Zainetdinov.
The meeting also focused on a draft plan of consultations of the CSTO member states regarding the issues of foreign policy, security and defense for H2 2012 – H1 2013.
The Council looked into a draft decision of the CSTO Council of Defense Ministers “Cooperation 2012 Exercise” in Armenia with the participation of the CSTO Collective Rapid Response Forces. The exercise is scheduled for 3-8 September 2012.
The agenda of the forthcoming session of the CSTO Council of Defense Ministers slated for May 2012 was also brought to the forefront of the CSTO council meeting.
The collective security treaty was signed in Tashkent on 15 May 1992. The decision to transform the existing cooperation mechanisms and structures of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty into an international regional organization – Collective Security Treaty organization was taken at the meeting of the Collective Security Council in Moscow on 14 May 2002. The CSTO comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
