Myasnikovich wants impact of Russia’s WTO accession for Belarus assessed

MINSK, 11 May (BelTA) - Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich instructed to assess the impact of Russia’s WTO accession for Belarus.

The Economy Ministry is expected to prepare a comprehensive report assessing the impact of Russia’s WTO accession for Belarus. The analysis will be taken into account as the forecasts of socio-economic development for 2013 and 2015 are made. This analysis should be coordinated with the industries, regions, business unions. A package of legislative acts to minimize risks is also needed,” the Prime Minister said at a session of the Council of Ministers.

Mikhail Myasnikovich said that Belarus has big expectations from the Single Economic Space. “But what has actually been done, which projects, initiatives implemented? Unfortunately, there is nothing to brag about yet,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said. The Prime Minister recalled that a decision has been taken to adopt the program of Belarus’ Presidency in the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission. In that connection, he asked the Economy Ministry to report on the work done.

Analyzing the country’s social and economic development in Q1 2012, Mikhail Myasnikovich paid special attention to export figures. A number of ministries and departments failed to meet the targets. The Premier urged to rectify the situation by the end of June. “The state has set up all necessary conditions for exports. Practical work is what we need now,” he stressed.

Mikhail Myasnikovich also criticized the work of ministries with investors. “Investors complain that the Belarusian side does not offer interesting projects,” he said. Project feasibility studies are not available in English and do not comply with international standards,” the PM said. The Economy and Trade Ministries have been tasked to deal with the issue within a month.

The PM expressed confidence that the goal to improve the living standards of people is reachable within the next five years. “The goals set forth by the President can be fulfilled only through efficient production and higher labor productivity,” he added.
