Belarus concerned about missile defenses in Europe

MINSK, 22 October (BelTA) – Belarus is concerned about the deployment of an echeloned system of missile defenses in Europe. The statement was made by Mr Alexander Ponomarev, Deputy Head of the International Security and Arms Control Office of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, during nuclear disarmament debates of the First Committee at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly, the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry told BelTA.

BelTA has been told that Alexander Ponomarev had underlined that Belarus was the first country to voluntarily surrender nuclear weapons without any conditions. The weapons were the legacy of the Soviet Union. Belarus confirms its adherence to the denuclearized status within the framework of the Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation Treaty and calls upon other nations to take practical steps in the area of nuclear disarmament.

The Belarusian diplomat hailed the implementation of the 2010 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty by Russia and the USA and spoke in favor of further measures to reduce strategic nuclear armaments and delivery means. Belarus believes that the measures should include not only the destruction of outdated nuclear warheads and their carriers but also obligations to cease further improvement of nuclear weapons.

Alexander Ponomarev also informed the delegations of the First Committee about Belarus’ approaches to nuclear non-proliferation, peaceful uses of atomic energy, the more vigorous operation of multilateral disarmament forums, counteraction of nuclear terrorism, and the creation of zones free from nuclear weapons.
