Belarus to attend IAEA General Conference in Vienna

MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) - A Belarusian delegation headed by Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk will take part in the 56th session of the IAEA General Conference. The event will be held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna on 17-21 September, BelTA learnt from the Belarusian Embassy in Austria.

The main issues on the agenda will be the lessons of the accident at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, improving nuclear safety, physical protection of nuclear and radiological materials, improving preparedness and response system in the event of an emergency, the implementation of the IAEA safeguards, the program of technical cooperation, financing of the IAEA activities, ad also the ways of improving the decision-making mechanisms at the IAEA.

The main objective of the Belarusian delegation at the session is to advance national interests during the discussion of the issues on the agenda, promote the adoption of relevant resolutions, and to participate in the events and meetings.

The head of the Belarusian delegation is scheduled to address the plenary meeting of the General Conference on 18 September.

The Belarusian delegation will hold meetings with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, Deputy Director General, head of the department of nuclear energy, other representatives of the Secretariat, and also with the delegations of the states members of the IAEA.

Belarus’ representatives will attend other events, including the plenary meeting of the forum of cooperation of regulatory bodies, the annual meeting of the heads of regulatory bodies, meeting on the role and challenges for future owners and operators of nuclear power plants in the countries embarking on their first nuclear power programs.
