Three teams of OSCE long-term observers deployed in Brest Oblast

BREST, 7 September (BelTA) – The OSCE has deployed three teams of long-term observers for the elections to the parliament in Brest Oblast, Stella Hellier (United Kingdom), a representative of the OSCE/ODIHR mission, said as she met with Chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee Konstantin Sumar.

In Brest Oblast, Stella Hellier is working together with Gottfried Bramer (Germany). According to her, this is her ninth mission. In the capacity of a long-term and short-term observer she has already visited eight countries, including Moldova, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Sudan, and Kazakhstan. Gottfried Bramer monitored the elections in Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries. This is his second mission as an observer to Belarus. Stella Hellier and Gottfried Bramer have been working Brest Oblast since 26 August. In addition to Brest, they have already visited the towns of Zhabinka and Kobrin.

As stressed by Stella Hellier, the mission cannot choose their region where they will work. They have been assigned to Brest Oblast. Apart from their team, there are two more teams in the region: in Baranovichi and Pinsk. A total of 18 OSCE long-term observation teams are currently monitoring the election campaign in Belarus.

According to Stella Hellier, the main goal of the OSCE observation mission is to make sure elections are free and human rights are observed. As for the election campaign in Belarus, the mission will announce its preliminary findings on 24 September. The final findings will be published two months after the elections.

Sharing her impressions about the work in the Brest Oblast, Stella Hellier took note of a welcoming and friendly atmosphere in the region.

According to Konstantin Sumar, the Brest local authorities meet all the requirements of the national legislation regarding the election campaign and also the OSCE regulations. “It is important for us that the elections should be free and legitimate. The first stage of the election campaign showed that Brest Oblast stays committed to the national legislation and the OSCE recommendations’,” Konstantin Sumar said.
