No grounds for increasing prices in Belarus, Lukashenko says

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – There are no grounds to increase prices in Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko said in his annual State of the Nation speech to the Belarusian people and the National Assembly on 19 April.

“I put forward to the Government, the National Bank and local authorities my stringent requirement of more effective price regulation. Today there are no and cannot be any grounds for increasing prices in Belarus. Any facts of the prices hitting the forecast level, especially it regards consumer goods, should be the subject of immediate examination,” the head of state said.

The domestic market should be cleaned from those who try lining their pockets by means of super-profits making use of their dominant position. The same should be done in respect to the price policy in the utility services.

“We should be guided by a well-known rule: prices are constantly increased only by those who abuse their position on the market. My requirement to the government and the National Bank remains in place. The annual growth of consumer prices should not exceed the forecast target. It is the best if it will make up nearly 10%,” the head of state noted.

“After the last governmental session, many started talking that while the President orders, Myasnikovich and company do everything they want,” the head of state said. Addressing the Prime Minister, the President continued: “Mikhail Vladimirovich, the April statistics say that the situation with prices has finally stabilized. So I can tell one thing: everything is done as President says, sooner or later.”
