Belarus-NATO cooperation discussed

MINSK, 9 January (BelTA) – Avenues of Belarus-NATO cooperation were discussed at a meeting at the Belarusian Foreign Ministry on 9 January. The meeting was between Mr Vladimir Gerasimovich, Head of the International Security and Arms Control Office of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, and Ambassador of Estonia to Belarus Mr Jaak Lensment. The Ambassador acts as the head of the NATO contact embassy in Belarus starting the year 2013, the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry told BelTA.

The sides aired their views regarding the current state and prospects of advancing Belarus-NATO cooperation.

Vladimir Gerasimovich informed Jaak Lensment about priority avenues of Belarus’ pragmatic cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, including the transit of NATO cargoes via Belarus to the international security assistance force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, the counteraction of modern transboundary challenges and threats, the prevention and response to natural and man-caused emergencies, fight against terrorism, drugs trafficking, and slave trade, the counteraction of transnational organized crime.

The sides agreed to regularly interact in various aspects involved in Estonia’s execution of the functions of the NATO contact embassy in Belarus.
