UNDP announces contest to bolster environmental management system

MINSK, 18 July (BelTA) – The United Nations Development Program invites public organizations to participate in the contest to bolster the environmental management system, BelTA learnt from the United Nations Department of Public Information in Belarus.

The project “Bolstering the environmental management system by means of developing the potential of non-governmental organizations (NGOs)” is financed by the European Union and implemented within the framework of the joint initiative of the UNDP and the GEF Small Grants Program (SGP). It aims to promote sustainable development and improve the environment through more effective participation of the civil society in the environmental management.

Only legally registered national NGOs can apply for participation in the project. The NGOs should carry out an environmental mission, possess the experience in the field of environmental work or have a considerable interest in addressing environmental issues.

The maximal sum of each grant cannot exceed $50,000. Co-financing from other sources cannot be less than 10% of the sum of the grant. The term of each project cannot exceed 18 months.

The goal of the project is to strengthen inner and outer potential of NGOs and develop their skills for successful environmental management. The attainment of these goals will be made possible through the allocation of small grants for several projects implemented under the supervision of NGOs. The goal of the project is to improve NGOs’ knowledge and skills so that they could partake in the development of environmental policy and natural resources management, cooperate in the process of decision making on key matters and represent the interests of citizens and general public in discussions and debates on environmental issues and sustainable development.
