New format for Belarus-Moscow cooperation

MOSCOW, 23 May (BelTA) - Belarus and Moscow are developing cooperation in a new format, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Igor Petrishenko told a press conference, BelTA learned.

In 2011-2013 the main problem in cooperation between Belarus and Moscow was the building of relations with the new members of Moscow Government.

This matter was discussed during a meeting between Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin in March last year. Following the meeting the agreement was reached on a new format of cooperation. The parties agreed to give a special status to the relations. It was determined that this cooperation would be supervised by the Prime Minister and the Mayor of Moscow. Working groups have been set up to coordinate bilateral cooperation.

Moscow and Belarus have 170 agreements on cooperation and partnership in various areas, including 12 intergovernmental agreements, 31 between sectoral government bodies, 11 between prefectures and regions, and 92 between districts.

According to the Ambassador, the cooperation between Belarusian Oblasts and the administrative districts of Moscow has proved efficient. “Cooperation between Belarus and Moscow is fruitful. It is traditionally supported and developed at the level of strategic partnership,” said Igor Petrishenko.
