Minsk to host Belarusian-Latvian seminar on forestry 16-17 May

MINSK, 15 May (BelTA) – The international seminar "Belarus-Latvia. Business and prospects for cooperation in the timber industry. Investments. Harvesting. Trade. Logistics” will take place in Belarus on 16-17 May, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Forestry Ministry of Belarus.

"The seminar will serve as an effective incentive to reach new agreements between Belarus and Latvia on cooperation in the forestry industry," said the ministry.

Attending the seminar will be representatives of the Forestry Ministry, Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE), the Embassy of Latvia in Belarus, Republican Association of Timber Industry and a business delegation of Latvia.

On the first day the Forestry Ministry will host a plenary meeting. Deputy Forestry Minister Leonid Demyanik will make a presentation “The forestry industry in Belarus. Prospects for development. Investments.” The BUCE Board Chairman Arkady Salikov will make a report on the Belarusian timber exchange market and its prospects. The participants of the seminar will be welcomed by Latvian Ambassador in Belarus Mihails Popkovs, embassy counselor for economic affairs Dainis Freimanis. The head of the Latvian delegation Igors Krasavcevs will talk on the Latvian experience on the forest industry development.

The seminar will discuss the regulatory framework governing the export of forest products and the domestic market, and will talk over the quality of the timber harvesting services and the role of the private business and the state. The Belarusian experience of using foreign companies in logging and also the development prospects will be also on the agenda. Participants will examine the exchange trade in forest products, and analyze the practice of holding exchange trade.

In the afternoon the participants will tour the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange. The Latvian delegation will get acquainted with the work of the BUCE, with the organization of trades and registration of transactions. The parties are planning to discuss the issues of mutual cooperation in the sale of Belarusian products.

On the second day, the delegation will visit the Rossony forestry, get acquainted with its manufacturing facilities, the woodworking shop, the logging operations by the forestry itself and third-party organizations.
