Belarus to monitor Azerbaijani presidential election

MINSK, 8 October (BelTA) - Belarus’ MPs and members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus will make part of the international presidential election observation mission in Azerbaijan, BelTA has learnt.

Representing the Central Election Commission in the capacity of short-term observers will be CEC Chairperson Lidia Yermoshina and CEC member Marina Rakhmanova. They are set to meet with top officials from the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission and exchange views on the election process with observers from other countries. Lidia Yermoshina will be one of the drafters of the final document summarizing the electoral process.

Monitoring the election campaign will be, among others, Svetlana Soroko, member of the Permanent Commission for Education, Science, Culture and Social Development of the Council of the Republic. Among MPs from the House of Representatives of the National Assembly who are due to head for Baku is Nikolai Samoseiko, Chairman of the International Affairs Commission, and Galina Lazovskaya, member of the Permanent Commission for Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media.

Both MPs will work as part of the CIS election observation mission. Nikolai Samoseiko will coordinate the international observation group of the Belarus-Russia Union State Parliamentary Assembly, while Galina Lazovskaya will be part of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly,” the press service of the House of Representatives said.

The MPs are expected to hold meetings at the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan, visit the territorial election commissions, candidates’ headquarters and polling stations and attend a press conference of the CIS observer mission.

The presidential election in Azerbaijan is scheduled for 9 October.
