UN GA passes Belarus-initiated resolution on UN-CIS cooperation

MINSK (BelTA) – The UN General Assembly has passed the resolution “Cooperation between the United Nations Organization and the Commonwealth of Independent States” put forward by Belarus, the current CIS president, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

The CIS got an observer status at the UN General Assembly back in March 1994. Since that time the cooperation between the CIS and the UN agencies has been gaining momentum. The CIS signed agreements with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the Economic Commission for Europe, the UN Office at Geneva and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

The press service noted that in order to make the cooperation between the UN and the CIS more efficient, the parties need to build a solid foundation for such cooperation that will facilitate the contacts between the CIS and the UN institutions. This is one of the objectives of the UN GA resolution “Cooperation between the United Nations Organization and the Commonwealth of Independent States”.
