Makei: The future UN Secretary General should be a strong personality

MINSK (BelTA) – The United Nations head-to-be should be a strong personality, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in an interview to the United Nations Radio, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Potential candidates for the post are currently considered. Vladimir Makei did not rule out that the list of contenders would be expanded. “It does not matter who will take the post, a man or a woman, an older or a younger candidate. It is highly important that this should a strong personality,” the minister said.

It is directly related to the challenges the planet is facing and their number is constantly increasing. “These challenges take an absolutely different look. Therefore, the response should be unconventional too. Here, we need a UN head with the corresponding political and administrative instinct to find the right response to the changing situation. These can be terrorism problems, peace and security issues, drugs trafficking and many others,” the minister is confident. It is also important to assess the existing rules. “It is inadmissible to keep as a dogma the rules taken long time ago. Perhaps they need to be polished taking into account the changing situation, the changing development in the world,” the minister added.

When asked on whether Belarus is going to nominate its candidate for the post of the UN Secretary General, Vladimir Makei said that there are no such plans. “We see that among the potential candidates for the post of the UN Secretary General there are people who could be really good heads of the organization for the coming period,” the minister said.
