Constitutional Court: Belarusian legislation helps women combine career and motherhood

MINSK ( BelTA) – Belarusian legislation helps women combine career and motherhood, Judge of the Belarusian Constitutional Court Yelena Semashko said at a press conference, BelTA has learned.

“Modern research by anthropologists and geneticists confirms the absence of innate differences in the abilities of men and women. Existing differences are shaped by the social environment, where legal regulation plays an important role. One of the most significant factors influencing this is legislation, which establishes specific legal conditions for the professional and personal development of women and men. At the constitutional level, Belarus guarantees equality of rights and opportunities in education, professional training, employment, career advancement, as well as in socio-political and cultural life, and ensures equal pay for work of equal value,” she stated.

Labor legislation establishes additional social and legal guarantees for women such as extended maternity leave (for up to three years), and prohibits assigning women to a range of jobs with hazardous working conditions. As the judge noted, this is driven by the state's need to provide special care for individuals requiring enhanced social and legal protection, which includes women.

“It seems to me that these are precisely the rules that help our Belarusian women, whether scientists or representatives of other professional field, achieve that very balance between career, family, and motherhood," Yelena Semashko noted.
