MINSK ( BelTA) – What areas will be focused on in the course of developing Belarus’ regions in the current five-year term and what tasks the city of Minsk faces were revealed by Belarusian Deputy Economy Minister Maria Mazhinskaya during a city information stream at Minsk City Hall, BelTA has learned.

Maria Mazhinskaya noted that the country places great emphasis on specialization and competitive advantages of every individual region. “For two consecutive five-year plans strong regions have been a priority of social and economic development. Speaking of the last five-year plan, the comprehensive development of every region was carried out in two directions: the development of production capacity with a differentiated approach and targeted support for every region as well as the creation of a comfortable environment, including the accelerated development of infrastructure and remote mobile forms of service,” she said.

The deputy minister noted that as a result, interregional wage disparities in the country have been reduced, production capacity has been strengthened, and housing and social infrastructure construction has been actively pursued throughout the five-year period.

Maria Mazhinskaya also reiterated that strong regions remain a priority in the current five-year period. “We continue talking about creating equal opportunities for employment and quality of life for the population in every region. The policy of the state is to reach every resident, every corner of our country. Here we have two key directions: comprehensive social and economic development inside oblasts where every region develops as a single economic complex involved in social and economic processes, and priority territories with unique potential for every region,” she noted.

According to the deputy minister, Minsk, oblast capitals, and major cities will focus on innovative development. At the same time, small-scale manufacturing facilities will be established in small settlements, and attention will be paid to creating comfortable living conditions.

“Every region has its own priority groups, which should serve as an additional impetus for the development of the entire region. For Brest Oblast and Gomel Oblast the main focus is on the development of the Pripyat Polesie, in Vitebsk Oblast on the area of the Vitebsk Lake District, and in Grodno Oblast on the Neman River area. For Minsk Oblast the focus is on the formation and development of the Minsk Industrial Belt. Attention will also be paid to seven districts in the southeastern region of Mogilev Oblast,” she said.

Maria Mazhinskaya emphasized that the capital faces special challenges, as it has to serve as a model for other regions. “In the industrial sector the task is to create knowledge-intensive, high-tech, and compact production facilities in the fields of mechanical engineering, electric transport, and pharmaceutics. In the service sectors Minsk should serve as a hub for high-tech and accessible healthcare, an area for training the skilled personnel the economy needs, and a flagship for digitization at the national level. And, of course, the development of tourism involving all its components, especially creative ones,” she added.

The deputy economy minister also noted that special attention is planned to be given to Minsk’s satellite towns. “The capital city should participate in creating infrastructure in the satellite towns to make it comfortable to live in these towns and work in Minsk. To this end, we will further improve transportation access and focus on creating comfortable living conditions,” she concluded.
