MINSK (
BelTA) – The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus and the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation on 27 May, BelTA has learned.
The cooperation agreement was signed as a result of a meeting between Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko and Speaker of the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe Jacob Mudenda. During the meeting, it was highlighted that the cooperation agreement will contribute to strengthening brotherhood and friendship between the two countries.
According to the speaker of the House of Representatives, inter-parliamentary friendship groups are set to play a leading role in implementing the agreement. Such a cooperation group with the Parliament of Zimbabwe has already been formed in the National Assembly. Belarus expects the swift formation of a similar group in the Parliament of Zimbabwe.
It was noted that this will allow lawmakers to stay informed of current issues, participate in the work of the intergovernmental commission, and study the challenges faced by the executive branch and business owners during the implementation of projects, while also providing potential assistance through their involvement.
Igor Sergeyenko stressed that the visit of the leadership of the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe to Minsk is the first in the history of bilateral Belarus-Zimbabwe relations. He expressed confidence that its outcomes will help open a new chapter in the development of bilateral cooperation.
Overall, the speaker emphasized, the year 2026 is marked by active parliamentary contacts between the two nations. In February, President of the Senate of Zimbabwe Mabel Memory Chinomona visited Belarus. Thus, it is fair to speak of full-fledged contacts at the level of both houses of parliament.
