MINSK (
BelTA) – In Belarus, there is a growing need for comprehensive improvement of the Code on Marriage and Family, Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko said at a seminar to discuss ways of improving legislation in the field of marriage and family relations hosted by the Loshitsa historical and cultural complex in Minsk, BelTA has learned.
According to Igor Sergeyenko, the venue for the seminar was chosen not by chance. It is a unique site in Minsk, which many Belarusians choose for wedding ceremonies. Last September, the renovated Loshitsa historical and cultural complex was visited by the head of state. “Aleksandr Lukashenko has repeatedly emphasized that a truly strong family is a continuation not only of someone’s name, but of the entire Belarusian people. A strong family with two or more children should become a way of life. As the president noted yesterday at a meeting with the Council of Ministers, motherhood and fatherhood should become a fashionable trend. The formula is simple: two parents, two children. Only this way can we be confident that future generations will continue, firmly holding sovereignty in their hands and living in peace,” he stressed.
Igor Sergeyenko noted that the Code on Marriage and Family does not directly impact the birth rate or the demographics, but it does create guarantees for the protection of the rights of every family member, making marriage and family more stable and attractive for having children. “The protection and strengthening of the institution of family and marriage, according to the Constitution of our country, is a priority of state policy, and its effective implementation is impossible without proper legal regulation. Several years ago, we adopted a law amending certain provisions of the Code on Marriage and Family. The amendments affected a wide range of issues and were targeted in nature, from the property interests of minors to the registration of civil status acts. But today, there is a growing need for comprehensive improvement of the Code, taking into account both the accumulated law enforcement practice and advancing technologies,” Igor Sergeyenko explained.
The House of Representatives has received the proposals for a range of amendments to the Code from the Supreme Court, the Justice Ministry, and the Minsk City Executive Committee, the Speaker noted. “These proposals are supported by the MPs as well. The Standing Committee on Health, Physical Culture, Family and Youth Policy is ready to work hand in hand with all these institutions to swiftly draw up a bill revising the Code on Marriage and Family,” he said. “I have no doubt that today’s meeting will allow us to tackle the most pressing issues, which will then find their way into the bill. After all, stable legislation in such a vital area is invaluable."
Vladimir Kukharev, Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee, stressed that the event is an opportunity to take a deeper look at current issues in marriage and family relations and the proposed solutions, which will naturally translate into the adoption of relevant regulatory legal acts in due course.
