Lukashenko sees no unresolvable issues in Belarus-Pakistan relations

BISHKEK (
BelTA) – There are no unresolvable issues in relations between Belarus and Pakistan, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Bishkek on 1 September, BelTA has learned.
“Thank you for taking the time to meet and discuss some issues arising in our relations. Problems exist and always will, but there are no problems that you and I cannot overcome. Let’s build on this,” Aleksandr Lukashenko told Shehbaz Sharif.
“You and I agreed that we must maintain good political relations and implement economic projects. Frankly speaking, everything is fine on the political front. We have warm political ties and strong personal relations. We are friends, plain and simple,” the head of state said.
At the same time, he pointed out that bilateral trade between the two countries dipped slightly last year. “Our trade dropped by about 20%. However, this August we are seeing progress in terms of executing our directives. Both our specialists and yours have been assigned specific tasks. I believe that next year should be much more active for us,” Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.
The president also asked the Pakistani prime minister to convey his warmest wishes to his brother, Nawaz Sharif: “Good health is the most important thing. I think that in the near future we will find time to meet with you in Pakistan. Naturally, if he or you have even the slightest opportunity to visit Belarus, we will be waiting for you.”
In turn, the Pakistani prime minister congratulated the Belarusian leader on his recent birthday and extended his warmest wishes. “The cameras are on, so I wouldn’t dare ask how old you are. But if they weren’t here, I would have inquired about your age,” Shehbaz Sharif joked.
“I’ll tell you later, off-camera,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said smiling.
The Pakistani prime minister also conveyed best wishes to the Belarusian president from his brother, Nawaz Sharif.
During the meeting, the Belarusian leader and the Pakistani prime minister discussed various areas of bilateral interaction. The Pakistani side expressed interest in cooperating with Belarus in agriculture and high tech. Training of specialists was also on the agenda, with the leaders noting that a group of Pakistani experts will soon arrive in Minsk.
Additionally, attention was paid to the USA-Iran conflict, as well as the overall situation in the region.
