Belarusian parliament speaker emphasizes role of young people in defending historical truth

MOGILEV ( BelTA) – The role young people play in protecting the historical truth in the era of hybrid wars and the reasons behind the current struggle for people’s minds were mentioned by Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, First Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Igor Sergeyenko during the Union State youth forum Memory. Choice. Responsibility in Mogilev, BelTA has learned.

During the plenary session he expressed confidence that the packed program of the forum and the festival “Young people for the Union State” and the sincere communication between participants of the events will demonstrate that this Union State project has a future based on the foundation of common values.

“Such concepts as memory, choice, and responsibility, which make up the motto of the forum, have firmly entered the consciousness of the young people of Belarus and Russia and are a reliable compass on the path of serving the Motherland. One cannot confidently move towards a goal without knowing the starting point. Every person builds their future by relying on family histories and values, on experience, on the peculiarities of the environment in which they were shaped as individuals,” Igor Sergeyenko noted. “Collective memory, traditional values, and reliable moral guidelines help unite society and give the state the necessary margin of safety amid large-scale geopolitical transformations.”

He once again drew attention to the path the countries of the collective West have chosen for themselves: they try to solve the systemic problems of their political and economic model at the expense of the well-being of other countries and nations. “The entire arsenal of tools has been deployed: from political pressure and economic sanctions to an information and psychological war of unprecedented scale. A war to win you, dear friends, your minds, meanings, and values,” he told participants of the forum. “You are the descendants of the generation of victors of the multiethnic Soviet nation, which in a difficult time for the Fatherland stood firm at the cost of unprecedented efforts and heroism and freed the world from the brown plague.”

As Igor Sergeyenko once again emphasized, today it is more important than ever to preserve unity by presenting a broad front against the followers of Nazi ideology and attempts to revise the results of World War Two. Modern falsifiers of history try to divide brotherly nations and to reformat the consciousness primarily of young people. But the young people of the Union State and the residents of Belarus and Russia continue to preserve in their memory the feat of their ancestors during the Great Patriotic War because that terrible tragedy affected many families. The feat of the victors is not just dates in school textbooks. “It is also the rejection of lies and cruelty and a colossal responsibility for maintaining peace, security, humanism, and justice. By protecting the truth about the war, we protect our right and the right of our children to live in peace and accord,” he said.

Preserving the historical truth and memory and the continuity of generations is a task that is as important as building up the defense potential of the Union State. “The academic community of Belarus and Russia, including its young people, is called upon to fulfill a special mission in ensuring sovereign development in the era of hybrid challenges,” the chairman of the House of Representatives noted. “The parliamentary dimension of the Union State purposefully creates mechanisms that allow young people not only to speak about problems but also to participate directly in resolving them. The task of young people is not simply to observe politics but to be ready to assume responsibility for the future of their countries, guided by the principle of ‘one Fatherland, two states’. It is necessary to preserve all the best that we have inherited from previous generations in the common space from Brest to Vladivostok, reliably ensuring peace, sovereignty, security, and well-being of our brotherly countries and nations.”

Igor Sergeyenko is confident that the forum in Mogilev will become an important step in consolidating the meanings that underlie the Union State, will enrich historical science, and will contribute to the successful implementation of projects for preserving and protecting historical memory.

The forum will continue with speeches by participants that will be followed by panel sessions.
