MINSK (
BelTA) – Belarus and Myanmar are actively working on further developing their bilateral cooperation, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a meeting with Aung Lin Dwe, Speaker of the House of Nationalities of the Assembly of the Union of Myanmar, in Minsk on 22 October, BelTA has learned.
“Welcome to Belarus. It is good that you have arrived precisely at this time, when we are actively developing future areas of cooperation with your country. It is not just about areas of cooperation, but rather future contracts and concrete actions between your country and Belarus,” the head of state said.
“To be absolutely frank and speak diplomatically, I must say that we can achieve significantly more in trade and economic matters than we currently have. At the very least, our political relations have advanced far ahead of the economy. The economy needs to catch up to the level of our political relations,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.
The head of state noted that the Belarus-Myanmar committee on trade and economic cooperation needs to put forward more proposals aimed at intensifying bilateral cooperation. “I am absolutely convinced that parliamentarians in this regard should, if not outpace the presidents, be a true pillar for the leadership of our countries in promoting the interests of Belarus in Myanmar and Myanmar in Belarus,” the president said. “Your visit shows that Myanmar’s parliamentarians are ready to act and are already doing so in this direction. I assure you that our parliamentarians will do the same.”
“We are committed to serious relations between our two countries because there are economic foundations for our successful cooperation in the future. We simply must not waste time, we need to move forward. The rapid evolution of international relations drives us to do so. The situation demands it,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.
Aleksandr Lukashenko also noted good prospects for Myanmar itself, given the positive domestic developments in the country: “I congratulate you on what seems to be the successful conclusion of an intense political period in Myanmar. I am absolutely convinced that now all avenues for economic development within the country and for supporting your people are open to you. You have many friends in the world. You can be absolutely sure of that.”
