Lukashenko urges OSCE to return to its professional duties

MINSK ( BelTA) – The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) needs to return to its professional duties, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioglu in Minsk on 3 November, BelTA has learned.

“I hold the view that a multipolar world and diversity are what our planet needs today. In your heart, I am sure, you adhere to this principle. You are an experienced person. It was in your time that this idea was laid down – cooperation between different countries, cooperation of all with all, dialogue and conversation. So your arrival at our conference is no accident. We value this very much,” the president said. “As for the OSCE, I must say that we have an ambiguous attitude towards this organization, for reasons known to you. But, discussing the role of the OSCE professionally, I would like to say that we will always fight for our Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to return to its professional duties and work in the direction of security and cooperation.”

“For several years now there has been a war in Europe. For the OSCE this is a serious challenge. There has been no reaction from this organization. Perhaps there is one, but I know nothing about it. And it would be necessary for the heads of OSCE member states to know about it,” the Belarusian leader pointed out.

Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the fact that the OSCE has slid onto the rails of criticism in only one direction and of the same states. For example, the OSCE sends an observer mission to elections, for the duration of the electoral campaign, with pre-prepared reports. It is obvious to everyone what the OSCE will say in Russia and Belarus, and what the organization, the OSCE Secretariat, will say about elections in Western countries, the president stated.

One example is the elections to the U.S. Congress, where the OSCE is not present at all, observers were not allowed past the door. “How are we to treat this?” the head of state asked. “We treat it calmly.”

“Once again I repeat: the organization must deal with security and cooperation in Europe. Maintain and keep order in our common home, the European one. Well, the Americans thought and decided: if we cannot keep order in our own home, why go to some other home and observe some issues,” the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the OSCE’s special role and warned: “We very much do not want the OSCE to repeat all the mistakes of the UN.” The president noted that many professional people work at the OSCE who understand what is happening and will act in the right direction. “Evidence of this is your visit to Belarus and your attendance at this conference. This is a serious signal to others,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said, addressing the OSCE secretary general.
